WordPress or a custom website: how to choose for your business
WordPress, a custom-built site, or a static site? A practical comparison for small businesses on editing, speed, cost of ownership, security and SEO.
Most small businesses do not need to understand frameworks to make this decision. They need to answer three questions honestly.
1. How often will you change the content?
- Every week (blog posts, offers, new products): WordPress is usually the better fit. Your team can edit pages and publish posts without a developer.
- A few times a year: a custom or static site is simpler. There is less to update and less that can break.
2. Do you sell online?
If you want an online store without a monthly platform fee, WooCommerce on WordPress is a solid, widely supported choice. It handles products, stock, shipping, tax and payment gateways that support UPI, cards and net banking.
If you sell only a handful of items or services, a simple enquiry or payment link on a custom site may be enough.
3. How much does speed matter?
All three can be fast. The difference is how easy it is to keep them fast.
- Static and custom sites are fast by default because there is little running on the server.
- WordPress is fast when it is built lean. Most slow WordPress sites are slow because of heavy page builders, too many plugins and large images, not because of WordPress itself.
Side by side
| WordPress | Custom / static | |
|---|---|---|
| Editing by your team | Easy | Needs a developer or a CMS |
| Online store | WooCommerce | Usually separate |
| Ongoing updates | Monthly | Rare |
| Speed | Good when built lean | Excellent by default |
| SEO | Strong with good set-up | Strong with good set-up |
The SEO question
Search engines do not prefer one platform. They reward pages that load quickly, are clearly structured, answer the searcher's question and are easy to use on a phone. Either option can do that well, or badly.
A simple rule
Choose WordPress if content changes often or you want a store. Choose custom or static if content is stable and you want the lowest maintenance.
